I know it’s been a minute since these monstrous freakshakes appeared on the Instagram scene, however, I don’t think I could ever get sick of scrolling through these mouthwatering images of milkshakes on steroids. I mean, milkshakes are pretty amazing on their own, but when you load them up with a buttload (excuse the term) of sweets, treats, and MORE sweets, you’re speaking my language.

Looking for inspiration, I decided to go through my candy drawer(s) of goodies to figure out what kind of freakshake I wanted to make. I seemed to have a surplus of peanut butter (you can NEVER have too much peanut butter) and a good variety of peanut butter treats. To build off of the peanut butter theme, I was reminded of one of my favorite sandwiches–FLUFFERNUTTERS, a.k.a. peanut butter and marshmallow fluff sandwiches, a.k.a. the dessert of all sandwiches. And of course, I couldn’t stop there…so why not make it a TOASTED Fluffernutter Freakshake?

On their own, marshmallows are really nothing special. The real magic happens when they’re toasted to a crisp and oozing with that warm and creamy center. To do this, I toasted some marshmallows in the oven under the broiler until they were nice and dark brown. If you want a little more of that “toasted” flavor, I’d recommend keeping them under the broiler until they’re just about to burn. I’d even go a little darker than the photo below. You’ll definitely want to keep an eye on them the entire time because it literally takes seconds for this to happen.

Immediately after I removed the marshmallows from the oven, I carefully transferred them to my food processor by scooping them up with a spatula. Since I don’t have a blender, I used my food processor to combine the ingredients. Once the toasted marshmallows, peanut butter, and milk are blended together, the vanilla ice cream is added. That takes care of the milkshake portion of the recipe…now for the fun stuff!

It’s really up to you as to how you want to dress up your milkshake. The sky’s the limit when it comes to freakshakes. Like I mentioned earlier, I just went through my pantry, adding whatever I thought would taste amazing in this shake. For looks, and of course flavor, I added a few strips of peanut butter along the bottom interior of the glass.

Then I frosted the outer rim of the glass with some MORE peanut butter. After all, it was only necessary seeing as I needed something to “glue” all my little goodies to. Speaking of goodies…

The rim is made up of a tempting mosaic of crunchy Nutter Butter cookies, peanutty Reese’s Pieces, and sweet peanut butter chips. Loading the rim up with all kinds of tasty little goodies is almost as fun as eating the freakshake itself…ALMOST.

Once the glasses are all dolled up, it’s time to fill the glasses with the thick and creamy toasted fluffernutter milkshake. If you find that there’s not enough milkshake to fill the glass, I’ve got the perfect fix for that. It’s called whipped cream. Just swirl in a generous mountain of fluffy whipped cream as high as you like. There are no rules or limits in Freakshake Land.

To add a little flare and pièce de résistance, I inserted a straw of toasted marshmallows into the shake. Finish it off with a few more cookies and candies, along with a luscious drizzle of marshmallow sauce, and you’ve got yourself a masterpiece of a milkshake.

Excuse me, FREAKSHAKE.

Ingredients

  • cup peanut butter
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 18 regular marshmallows plus more for topping
  • 4 ½ cup vanilla ice cream
  • Toppings: Peanut Butter, Nutter Butter cookies, Reese’s Pieces, Peanut Butter chips, whipped cream, marshmallow sauce (Smucker’s)

Instructions

  • In a food processor/blender, blend the peanut butter and milk together until smooth.
  • Preheat your broiler and arrange marshmallows on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Toast marshmallows until they've browned/blackened to your preference. Watch them closely as they can go from nicely browned to black and burnt really quickly.
  • Once toasted, immediately use a spatula to scrape the marshmallows into the food processor/blender, blending until smooth. Add the ice cream and continue blending until combined. Place milkshake into the freezer while you prepare the glasses.
  • Using a butterknife, spread strips of peanut butter along the bottom of a glass (see photo above). Spread a layer of peanut butter onto the rim of the glass--about an inch or so in width. Press Reese's Pieces, peanut butter chips, and Nutter Butter cookies into the peanut butter rim. Skewer two marshmallows with a straw and toast with either a mini blowtorch or gas stove. Repeat once more with a second glass
  • Divide milkshake between the two glasses. Top with whipped cream, more candy/cookies, and marshmallow sauce. Insert the toasted marshmallow straw. Enjoy!
