An ultra creamy toasted marshmallow milkshake drizzled with silky milk chocolate ganache and decked out in ALL of the s’more fixings!
Without a doubt, my all-time favorite camping treat is the always iconic s’more. It has the perfect combination of flavors and textures–crispy crunchy graham crackers, rich and deliciously melty milk chocolate, and ooey gooey toasted (oftentimes burnt to a crisp) marshmallow.
Even when I’m not in front of a campfire, I’ll toast up a marshmallow on my gas stove and pop it between some graham cracks and chocolate. I mean, why limit yourself to only eating this glorious treat during camping trips when you can enjoy it all year round?? Same goes for pumpkin!! But I digress…
As a self-proclaimed sugar addict, over-the-top desserts are kinda my thing. In my world, there’s absolutely no such thing as too much frosting, chocolate, sugar, butter, etc. And this week’s recipe was definitely NO exception…
As the title suggests, this milkshake is truly a FREAK of nature…but in a good way, of course!
Complete with a cool and creamy shake that’s infused with the deliciously toasty flavor of roasted marshmallows, silky smooth milk chocolate ganache, and ALL of the fixings of a traditional s’more, this frozen treat is a s’more lover’s dream come true!
Heck, you don’t even have to be a s’more lover to go absolutely bonkers for this shake. Just look at it!!
Side note: I have been dying to use these cute diner milkshake glasses FOREVER, so I was ecstatic to finally pull them out for a recipe!
While this gargantuan shake might look a little intimidating, there’s really not much to it. In fact, the toasted marshmallow milkshake only requires three ingredients–marshmallows, cream/milk, and vanilla ice cream. You’ll start by toasting the marshmallows in the oven. Turn your broiler on, then cover a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and lightly spray with nonstick cooking spray. This is going to make clean up SO much easier and a lot less sticky!
Next, you’ll place the marshmallows onto the prepared pan, spacing them out evenly. Place the pan of marshmallows under the broiler and watch them CLOSELY so that they don’t burn. It shouldn’t take longer than 45 seconds for them to toast.
Once toasted, take the pan out of the oven, then immediately turn each marshmallow over, so that the toasted side is now on the bottom, and the white side is facing up. Place the pan back into the oven until nice and toasty. Turning the marshmallows over and toasting a second time ensures that you get more of that heavenly toasty flavor in the milkshake!
The toasted marshmallows need to chill in the refrigerator for a few minutes before you make the shake. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a soupy mess when you combine them with the ice cream.
Once the marshmallows have reached room temperature, place them into a blender or a food processor along with a little heavy cream or milk, and blend until smooth. Add the vanilla ice cream, and continue blending until nice and creamy. Pour the milkshake into a freezer-safe container, and chill in the freezer while you assemble the glasses.
For these glasses, all I did was spread some melted milk chocolate onto the top half inch of the rim. Then I used it as glue to stick mini Hershey segments, broken graham cracker pieces and mini marshmallows to the glass. To “cement” everything, I placed the glasses into the freezer for a few minutes.
Since s’mores are traditionally made with Hershey’s milk chocolate bars, I made a milk chocolate ganache. All you have to do is heat some heavy cream in the microwave until it just begins to boil, pour the hot cream over some chopped milk chocolate (or chips), allow it to sit for a few minutes, then stir until smooth. That’s your ganache!
As far as toppings go, the world is your oyster! As you can see, I pimped these shakes out with a couple of s’mores, chocolate-covered graham crackers, toasted marshmallows, and Hershey chocolate bars. When it comes to freakshakes, the more the merrier, so don’t be afraid to let that FREAK flag fly!
Just before pouring the shake into the glasses, use a spoon to drizzle the milk chocolate ganache along the interior of the glass.
Oh, and don’t forget to save some for the very end!!
Tell me you’re not completely in LUST with this freakshake right now…
S'more Freakshake
Ingredients
For the Milk Chocolate Ganache
- â…“ cup milk chocolate (chips or chopped)
- ¼ cup heavy cream
For the Toasted Marshmallow Milkshake
- 40 large marshmallows
- ¼ cup heavy cream or milk
- 2 cups vanilla ice cream
For Assembly
- Melted milk chocolate
- Hershey chocolate bars
- Mini marshmallows
- Graham crackers
- Roasted marshmallows
- S'mores
Instructions
Make the Ganache
- Place the chocolate chips into a medium bowl.
- Pour the heavy cream into a glass measuring cup and heat in the microwave until it just begins to boil up. I recommend starting with 30 seconds, stirring it, and then placing it in the microwave for another 15-30 seconds more.
- Pour the hot cream over the chocolate, and cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Allow to sit for 3 minutes, remove the plastic wrap, then stir until completely smooth. Set aside to cool and thicken slightly.
Make the Milkshake
- Preheat the broiler.
- Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil, and spray lightly with nonstick cooking spray. Evenly space the marshmallows on the baking sheet.
- Place marshmallows under the broiler and watch carefully. Once browned and toasted, immediately remove them from the oven. Flip the marshmallows over so that the white un-toasted side is facing up, then return to the oven until toasted.
- Chill the toasted marshmallows in the refrigerator until room temperature--about 15-20 minutes.
- Once cooled, put the marshmallows into a blender (or a food processor, like I did), add the cream/milk, then blend until completely smooth. Add the ice cream and continue blending until combined.
- Pour milkshake into a freezer-safe container and chill in the freezer while you prepare the glasses. OR, if you don't feel like being fancy schmancy, go ahead and drink up!
To Assemble
- Using a spoon, spread melted milk chocolate along the top half inch of the glass rim. Using the melted chocolate rim as glue, stick Hershey segments, mini marshmallows, and graham cracker pieces to the glass. Place glasses in the freezer to solidify everything.
- Once the s'more rim is set, use a spoon to drizzle the ganache along the interior of each glass. Pour the milkshake into each glass. If desired, top with s'mores, graham crackers, toasted marshmallows, and more chocolate. Serve and enjoy!
