Not too long ago, I posted a recipe for Black and White Cookie Bars, which was basically my own spin on the classic NYC staple. Soft, cakey, and slathered in both vanilla and chocolate icing, these bars were definitely a hit in my family.

Shortly after posting this recipe, I got to thinking…how about a Black and White Cookie Puppy Chow?

So here we are today with this gloriously addictive mix! Complete with chocolate cake batter-coated cereal squares, vanilla cake batter-coated cereal squares, and mini fudge stripe cookies, this puppy chow has that perfect ratio of chocolate to vanilla, just like the iconic Black and White Cookie.

If you’ve been around my blog long enough, you know that I have a bit of an obsession with puppy chow/muddy buddies/chex mixes. I’m constantly dreaming up new themes, flavors, and possibilities, so it should come as no surprise that I would create a puppy chow based off of one of my favorite cookies.

Aside from how scrumptious this classic treat is, one of the best things about puppy chow is that it’s so quick and easy to make. In fact, this very recipe can be made in 15 minutes or less! You’ll start by making the “white side”, or the vanilla cake batter mix. Pour some white chocolate chips into a large microwave-safe bowl along with a little coconut oil. Coconut oil is added to thin out the white chocolate a bit, making it easier to coat the cereal squares more evenly.

After the cereal squares are tossed with the melted white chocolate, they get coated in a delicious dust storm of yellow/white cake mix and powdered sugar. Normally I shake the mixture in a large ziplock bag, but this time I decided to use a large sealed plastic container instead. Not only did this result in less chocolate getting stuck and therefore wasted on the plastic bag, but I didn’t have to go through two plastic bags since I could just wash and reuse the container again. This is definitely how I’m going to make puppy chow from now on.

The “black side” is made the same way, but with semi-sweet chocolate chips and chocolate/devil’s food cake mix. Once you have your “white side” and your “black side”, it’s time to combine them!

I also thought it would be cute to add mini fudge stripe cookies to the mix. They’re pretty similar to Black and White Cookies since they’re little vanilla cookies dipped and striped in chocolate. Not to mention, they add even more appeal to the mix. If you can’t find the mini kind, you can also use the regular-sized Fudge Stripe Cookies and break them into bite-sized pieces!

What I love about this mix is that you can alternate between the two flavors as well as the mini Fudge Stripes. I’m not sure whether I love the vanilla squares the most or the chocolate squares the most since they’re both so different in flavor. The yellow cake mix adds such a divine sweetness to the vanilla squares, and the devil’s food cake mix really amplifies the flavor of the chocolate squares. They’re truly a match made in puppy chow heaven, and I have no doubt you’ll find yourself scarfing down handfuls of this mix within seconds of making it.
